What is PSCHE and how is it taught at Park Lane?

Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE) is a vital part of the curriculum here at Park Lane. Our lessons aim to equip the pupils with skills and knowledge to be come successful members of their community. It supports them to make the right choices for themselves and others throughout their lives.

To enhance the delivery of our PSHCE curriculum at Park Lane, we use myHappymind. myHappymind is a science-backed program designed to help to promote positive mental health, foster pupil well-being, develop resilience and provide our pupils with strategies to support them to become happy members of society.

The myHappymind team of characters used in both the wellbeing programme for primary schools and early years settings

myHappymind is taught weekly. Pupils are introduced to a range of different characters through animations, songs and lessons. It is split into four discreet and progressive modules: 'Meet Your Brain', 'Celebrate', 'Appreciate', 'Relate' and 'Engage'. Each module is adapted by teachers at Park Lane to suit the requirements of their pupils.

More Information About Each Module:

Meet Your Brain - one of the modules included in the myHappymind wellbeing programmes for children

Understanding how your brain works and how to ensure we look after it so that we can manage our emotions and be at our best. Growth mindset is a key part of this too.

Celebrate - one of the modules included in the myHappymind wellbeing programmes for children

Understanding your unique character strengths and learning to celebrate them. This is a fantastic module for building self esteem.

Appreciate - one of the modules included in the myHappymind wellbeing programmes for children

Understanding why gratitude matters and how you can develop gratitude as a habit. Gratitude is key to wellbeing and resilience and we’re all about making it a habit!

Relate - one of the modules included in the myHappymind wellbeing programmes for children

Understanding why positive relationships matter and how to build them. We’re focussed on the building blocks of good relationships and friendships.

Engage - one of the modules included in the myHappymind wellbeing programmes for children

Understanding how to set meaningful goals that matter and how to keep resilient in times of challenge. This module is all about building self esteem and resilience too.

Pupils also take part in 'Happy Breathing' to allow them to develop a strategy to manage their emotions when they might be unable to control their emotional responses to different scenarios.

Zones of Regulation

At Park Lane, we also have a huge focus on emotions and allowing our pupils to develop an understanding of their own emotions. We support our pupils to recognise and identify their own emotions. To further their understanding of emotions, when they are ready, we begin to support them to understand why they might be feeling specific emotions and how they can support themselves to 'get back to the green zone'.

Relationships and Sex Education

Our RSE curriculum at Park Lane teaches our pupils how to develop healthy relationships (including those online) and to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. Our pupils will also learn what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour in relationships. As well as mental well-being and relationship education, our curriculum also teaches pupils about puberty, including menstruation. We use a variety of resources to teach this curriculum, but mainly focus on the 'SOSAFE' programme, which promotes social safety, as well as NSPCC resources such as 'Pantosaurus'.
