Preparing for Adulthood
Preparing for Adulthood
- Preparing for Adulthood (PfA) is the process of moving from childhood into adulthood and takes place when a young person with SEND moves from Children’s Services to Adult Services.
- Through the SEND reforms (2014) there was an emphasis for young people with SEND to have the same life chances as those of their mainstream peers, including achieving paid employment, independent living, housing options, good health, friendships, relationships and community inclusion.
- The support young children with SEND receive in the early years has a life-long impact on them and their family. (SEND Code of Practice
- There are four strands to the PfA programme:
- Employment
- Independent Living
- Community Inclusion
- Health
- At each stage of our children and young people’s learning and development, we work to prepare them for the new responsibilities, new experiences and the new challenges of the next stage of their education, training and employment. Most importantly, Park Lane School supports children and young people to be involved in making future choices about all aspects of their lives.
- At Park Lane School, the PfA programme is embedded throughout the school curriculum as well as in everyday activities outside of the classroom. We aim to raise aspirations and expectations and encourage all professionals and families to think about what the future might look like for our children and young people, from an early age.
- Planning and early integration of PfA outcomes within the curriculum creates a foundation of knowledge and experiences that enable the student by Year 9 to have a meaningful and successful progression which is supportive to their needs.
Qualification Feedback (ADAN Moderator July 2022):
'I have now completed moderation of PSD and it was an absolute delight – thank you. Extremely well organised and the young people certainly seem to have enjoyed all activities.
'Please find attached the Provision Statement of Results for PP. Again, it was a delightful sample and the activities which candidates take part in are perfect – as is the evidence. Please pass my congratulations to the candidates and the team – really excellent work!'
